This web site was one of the first sites on the web to have the pages served (mostly) by a open source relational database called PostgreSQL. This database is reliable enough to run a bank! On top of that is a highly customized version of OpenACS. OpenACS is an open source database backed web development package similar to Drupal and Joomla.
The custom programming on this site was done by American Stirling's expert web development staff led by a programmer who prefers to remain anonymous. The user interface was designed by Shailendra Rao and the logo and lots of other work was done by Taya Page.
It's programmed in an obscure scripting language called TCL, and it uses the AOL server, web server program.
