I recently worked on a landfill site where 1000 cubic metres of gas
containing 35%, or so, of methane was burned continuously.
I suggested that this heat be used to drive a Stirling engine
generating electricity, which could be sold to the National Grid or
used on site, but the idea was dismissed as impractical.
Is it impractical?

Assuming you meant 1,000 cu.m./day or 41.67 cu.m./hr
TVA utilizes methane from a large land fill waste site to be co-fired in a coal steam power generating plant to utilize the heating value rather that burning it in flare-off burner(s) on site.
In my opinion there are NO Stirling engines currently available to make this an economical application for 35% methane fuel gas.
