Rebuilding a Hand Held LTD SE

Post by stan.hornbaker »

My LTD hand held SE fell from the top of my PC monitor landing on a
carpeted floor. The shock tipped the glass cylinder in its socket in
the top plate enough to cause the piston to bind. The resultant
missalignment also caused the displacer to contact the uppper and
lower plates.

All moving parts were removed and the top plate with cylinder and
supprt bracket was separated from the bottom plate and displacer
cylinder ring. The fillets of epoxy on both sides of the top plate
were carefully cut from the glass to aluminum joints. This opened a
small crevice where the tilting of the cylinder was visible. A friend
suggested MEK solvent to soften the epoxy. The MEK was applied to the
exposed epoxy with a small syringe until the epoxy would give enough
to remove the cylinder.

All parts were carefully cleaned. The cylinder was epoxied into its
socket and when cured the engine was reassembled. It ran as soon as it
warmed up on my hand!

NOTE: This type of engine 'maintenance' is NOT for the faint of heart
nor anyone with three or more thumbs.

An exploded view of a similar engine can be seen at URL:
