The purpose of the Stirling engine will determine the route you must follow. For a Model Stirling engine there is a large amount of information available on the web by searching for "Stirling engine models" and variations of that search term. You will find many links at NotSCar.wik.is for web sites with extensive information on Stirling engine models. Exploring http://royuk.co.uk/engines.htm should be very helpful for a start.

If you are serious about building a Power Producing Stirling Engine, look in the Power Producing Stirling Engine forum for same and the last entries in the forum, the one from and reply to Igor under topic "displacer/cylinder volume ratio?" at or near bottom of list.
