Stirling for car ventilation

Post by hyc »

Hello,
I've been surfing the web looking for possible approaches to deal
with the
tremendous heat buildup in an automobile interior as it sits parked in
sunlight. I've seen solar powered window ventilation fans, but they're
inadequate for keeping my black car cool in Southern California. I thought
perhaps a thermoelectric generator might do the trick, but their
efficiency
is pathetic even with temperature differences of 200C.
It's well documented that a car interior can hit 150-180F on a
sunny day
with the ambient temperature at 80-90F. This doesn't provide enough
temperature difference to make use of a TEG, but it seems that it's plenty
for a Stirling Engine. I don't know anything about designing these things,
but surely you can envision a device, similar to one of these clip-on
solar
window fans, that could do the trick? Two obvious disadvantages of the
solar
approach are that when the window isn't aligned with the sun, the fan
doesn't
work, and of course, solar cells themselves are less efficient as
temperatures go up. The whole car continues to get hot even though the sun
isn't shining directly on the solar fan...
Of course, you have to get its price down in the $40 range to be
competitive with the other products already on the market, but I think
this
would be a viable way to get Stirling engines into common everyday
use. What
do you think?

I don't think it's gona work, simply because if you want to use the difference between inside & outside to cool the inside, you loose your temperature difference, it could only work with the working cylinder in the enclosed trunk of a sedan & popular bodyshapes all over the world are leaning more & more towards wagon/hatchback etc for the utility value & improved aerodynamics.
