Has anyone thought of "stirring" the air?

I'm still trying to envisage this, so forgive me for being a bit
vague. It struck me that the reciprocating displacement cylinder
must consume quite a bit of energy to shift air between the top and
bottom of the cylinder. Would it not be possible to rotate the air
and apply the heat/cold differential to opposing sides of the
cylinder. Air could be sampled from within the "stirring paddle".
Any engineers care to comment?
