Stirling engine concept would work. It's called the armagedon
project. Basicaly she has to create a life supporting shelter to
house 100 people for 100 years in the event an astroid hits earth.
This shelter has to have power, sewer, water, food etc. I saw the
story with Dean Kamen and Dan Rather and was so intrested in what
Dean is trying to do with the water purifier. I was wondering if the
concept of using a Stirling engine for power as well as water
purification, air purifaction, and posibly a sewer system would be
feasible. Does any one know of a site I can go to that would support
this theary? Also how would she go about presenting this? Can she
build her own Stirling engine? Also what form of heat source would
be possible to use under these circumstances. Thanks in advance for
any answere you might be able to help us with.

Hi Jaunita,

There are several reasons why I think a Stirling engine would be an excellent thing to write about in your daughter's report.

1. Some Stirling engines can be made to run almost indefinitely by designing them with seals that make no contacts.

2. Stirling engines can be made to run on any fuel.

3. They are just cool and real enough so that her teacher is not likely to know anything about them. [smile]

4. She could propose that it be fueled by sunshine, and if she thinks that her teacher can politically handle it (or won't know what this means) the engine could be fueled by a radio-isotope.

I'd suggest reading our book and possibly putting together one of our Stirling engine kits which she can run on a small light bulb to simulate solar energy.

Tell her to remember to add a spooky quote from the book of Revelation. It will add some style to her report.
